Lenovo - Dual Screen Notebook

This one won't win an award fro being the prettiest, but it definitely wins one for being the geekiest looking in our books.

Behold the Lenovo Thinkpad W700ds - jam packed with your choice of Intel Core 2 Quad processors,a NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M GPU, up to 8GB of RAM and up to 960GB of SDD / HDD storage.

"The primary 17-inch screen is supposedly the brightest on the market, and if there wasn't already enough to make you drool, it packs an integrated WACOM digitizer as well. However, this 11 pound package starts at $3,600, so you'd better be ready to break out the piggy bank come January when this beast is set to ship."

We aren't all hard up for this one though. It looks a little too overkill in our tastes.

Moto Aura

Back in 2002 (or as some may argue, late 2001), Motorola wowed us with the V70. Stylishly slick, it's swivel form factor came as a breath of fresh air to a market that was flooded with chunky candy bars and noisy clam shells that clicked louder than they rang. The top layer of the metalic phone swiveled around the display screen to unveil a *gasp* blue backlit keypad, and functioned as the earpiece.

Today, some six years later, Motorola is again wowing us with another phone. Based on the same swivel concept as the V70, the AURA is more than a mere upgrade of it's "predecessor". For starters, there's probably more technology involved in the 16,000,000 (16 million) color 300 dpi display than there was in the entire V70. Naturally, such a high-tech creation deserves nothing but the best protection, and that's exactly what the Grade 1 62-carat sapphire crystal lens is.
A smooth swivel motion is ensured by the use of a Swiss-made main bearing, which works hand-in-hand with a custom-engineered rotating mechanism that consists of nothing less than 130 more ball bearings. To round things off, the housing is coated with PVD, the same stuff they use to coat luxury watches.
The Motorola AURA will be available in the USA for a cool US$2,000, so you had better start saving up now!

FTEC SmartBook

FTEC today launched their first netbook PC in Malaysia, the FTEC Smart Book. Unveiled at FTEC’s TecAsia, the FTEC Smart Book is targeted at children from all ages as young as those in pre-schools as an educational tool and aims to provide them with access to mainstream technology.

The FTEC Smart Book is highly portable and includes a set of unique features that cater to the needs of young children who will be entering kindergarten and the primary grades. The ruggedized netbook is equipped with a water-resistant keyboard and an advanced theft-control feature using a network-issued digital ID certificate, and is capable of running many applications including educational software. It is ideal for Internet-centric usage models, such as Web-browsing, email, instant messaging, social networking, online video viewing, photo viewing, VoIP, and playing basic online games.

“We believe that early access to computers help children learn and we hope to see a positive impact of using computers in the building of the child’s critical thinking skills, communication and digital literacy. Through exploring computer experiences, these children build memory skills and learn how to seek out information,” said Mr. Tang Boon Koon, Managing Director of FTEC, at the launch.

The FTEC SmartBook is available in two prices RM1,299 and RM1,199 based on their different specifications. Read on for more info.

“As the cost of children’s education continues to be one of the most important aspects for Malaysian families, the launch of the FTEC Smart Book in Malaysia which retails from only RM1199.00 marks a first step toward breaking the barriers of affordability for millions of PC users, putting into reach many more parents and guardians who may not have been able to afford one before,” Tang continued.

Net books are highly portable PC devices that are optimized for Internet-centric uses but are also ideal for those who already have a PC and plan to use a netbook as a companion device. Intel anticipates that netbooks will be first targeted at the following high volume segments: education, young children, first-time buyers, seniors and housewives.

Navin Shenoy, General Manager, Intel Asia Pacific who was present at the launch said, “Intel in close collaboration with FTEC is extremely excited to announce the first version of netbook PC in Malaysia. With personal computing increasingly going mobile and the computer industry rapidly developing new classes of products to connect the next billion people to the Internet, Intel believes the demand for a new category of highly affordable, Internet-centric mobile computing devices dubbed “netbooks” and basic Internet-centric desktop PCs dubbed “nettops,” will grow substantially over the next several years.”

FTEC will also be collaborating with SMART Board interactive whiteboards to create an interactive teaching method and hope to see this tool adopted by pre-schools such as kindergartens and other children centres around Malaysia. As the Smart Books are all Wi-Fi enabled, it can be easily integrated with today’s technology-enabled classrooms. The teacher can present lesson activities on the SMART Board by touching the surface of the Board while the students follow the lesson material on their respective Smart Books. This allows the teacher to demonstrate and interact with that student’s SmartBook for the rest of the class to view.

The FTEC Smart Book will come in two models offerings either a 7-inch or 9-inch color LCD TFT display. The specifications are as follows:

9-inch FTEC SmartBook

IPhone from Kiasu

"iPhone arriving soon!" Scream the headlines of some rumour mongers in a small island south of us. One can only look in awe as some of us in"Bolehland" wouldn't be much too bothered by it with the rampant use of the iPhone here in our country. So far rumours have it that SingTel will be bringing it in to Singapore and launching it in September and the estimated price is at (Kiasu-SingPi)$690.

Not too bad a country which has an estimated 10,000 rogue iPhones running about, brought in through "different avenues". But will rumours just remain rumours or should some of the folks down south look forward to newer models such as 3G variant of the iPhone?

The big question is, will our "kiasu" neighbours opt for Apple's profit sharing plan which it already has with certain carries in the US and in Europe?

Perhaps this is a question we should ask our own mobile carriers.

Touch me

A little while back, Apple brought us all their 1st generation phone called the iPhone. Now, early this morning at 1.30am, news flooded the world with live feeds and coverage from San Francisco where Steve Jobs revealed Apple's latest range of iPods.

Images were leaked out about a shorter and fatter iPod Nano and rumours were spread that a new iPod which is based on the iPhone design and OS X was going to be release. Well all of them were true. Everything and every bit of news leaked out that was discussed came to pass with the emergence of a 1st generation iPod Touch offering 8Gb and 16Gb of memory at USD$299 and USD$399 respectively.

One new feature of the iPod touch itself is the new web browsing and Wi-Fi capabilities while offering a full 3.5" wide screen to watch your videos on. For those of you who have always complained that the iPod video's screen was too small, this is Apple's answer for you and the video playback usefulness of the Sony PSP.
